SENDSidekick

SENDSidekick is a practical admin and advocacy co-pilot for parent-carers navigating the SEND system in England.

It turns an overwhelming situation into a clear sequence: understand what is happening, identify the next useful action, put the right request in writing, collect the evidence, track the deadline and know when to escalate.

The platform combines free first-response tools, guided Action Packs, downloadable templates, evidence logs and plain-English support. It is designed around low mental load, data minimisation and real parent-carer life: one question at a time, no jargon maze, and a useful document or action at the end.

What's your tagline / mission?

Not difficult. Documented. Turning SEND overwhelm into the next clear action.

How did you start working on this idea?

I started SENDSidekick because I needed it. As a neurodivergent parent-carer navigating the SEND system for my own family, I have lived the midnight research, repeated explanations, missed or disputed steps and emotional cost of turning a crisis into the “right” email. Parents are not short of information. They are short of time, capacity and practical tools that turn that information into action. SENDSidekick grew from the systems, templates and evidence methods I created to keep my own family moving forward.

What problem are you trying to solve and how big is it?

England’s SEND system routinely expects exhausted parent-carers to understand law and local processes, translate complex needs into evidence, make the correct request, track statutory deadlines and escalate failures, often while caring for a child in crisis. Around one in five pupils receives SEN support, yet reliable information is scattered across legislation, statutory guidance, local policies, charities and informal advice. Families lose time, repeat their story, miss opportunities to create evidence and often pay for help only after matters have escalated. The problem is not simply access to information. It is turning the right information into the right action at the right time.

What is your solution and how does it work?

SENDSidekick turns each common SEND problem into a guided, low-demand pathway. An Action Pack asks one focused question at a time, explains what matters in plain English and creates a practical first-response pack: the next action, a ready-to-use email or letter, an evidence plan, relevant contacts, a chase date and an escalation route. The first pathway focuses on attendance difficulties, with further packs planned for EHC needs assessments, EHCP reviews, EOTAS, transport and evidence. The service is England-specific, anonymous by default and designed to support informed advocacy without pretending to replace specialist legal advice.

What is your business model / how do you make money?

Freemium. The essential first action stays free so a parent in crisis is never blocked by a paywall. Revenue will come from low-cost problem-specific Action Packs and an optional subscription for continuing admin, including saved cases, reminders, response analysis, integrations and support for multiple children or cases. Later revenue streams include professional and white-label licences for charities, parent-carer forums, education providers and other trusted SEND services.

How did you go to market and start acquiring customers?

SENDSidekick is starting with a coming-soon page, an email list and the free Attendance First-Response tool, giving parent-carers something useful before asking them to sign up. Acquisition will be led by high-intent SEO content, practical downloadable resources, short-form social content, current SEND news and problem-specific mini-sites. Each resource will lead to a clear next action and, where useful, a related Action Pack. Growth will also come through partnerships with parent-carer forums, SEND professionals, charities and complementary services.

How many customers and paid users do you have?

SENDSidekick is pre-launch and pre-revenue, so there are no paid users yet. The first public tool and early-access list are now being prepared. Validation is grounded in lived experience, repeated real-world parent-carer problems and the practical templates and workflows already used to manage complex SEND cases. The immediate goal is to measure completed tool journeys, useful outputs, email sign-ups and repeat use before introducing paid features.

What's your vision and strategic roadmap for product & marketing?

Phase 1: launch the coming-soon page, newsletter, Attendance First-Response tool and first downloadable Action Packs.

Phase 2: add guided pathways for EHC needs assessments, EHCPs and annual reviews, EOTAS, transport, evidence and common escalation routes, supported by verified national and local-authority information.

Phase 3: introduce secure saved cases, deadline reminders, response analysis, document and evidence organisation, and integrations.

Phase 4: offer professional and white-label licences and expand the problem-specific site network.

Marketing will follow the same route: answer urgent questions through search and social content, give a genuinely useful free first action, then nurture trust through email, partnerships and repeat tools.

Who is in your team?

SENDSidekick is currently founder-led by Jess Howarth, a neurodivergent parent-carer and SEND advocate with extensive lived experience of complex SEND administration. I lead the product concept, parent journey, content, advocacy workflows and brand. AI-assisted tools support research, drafting, design and operations. Specialist legal, data-protection and technical review will be brought in as the platform moves from validation to scale.

Are you looking to raise funds at the moment?

Not at present. SENDSidekick is being bootstrapped while the first tools are validated. The priority is to prove usefulness, trust and sustainable early revenue before considering external investment. I am open to strategic partnerships, mentoring and practical support that can accelerate responsible delivery without compromising accessibility or parent trust.

What would you advise to someone who is starting up?

Start with the pain you understand and build the smallest thing that makes it lighter. A polished roadmap means very little if the first user still cannot see what to do next. Listen closely, document the real problem, protect trust and make the next useful action obvious.
